Laundry rooms can be a high risk for water damage. Between plumbing, wet clothes, and people tossing their damp clothes or towels on the floor, it’s not uncommon for people to replace their floors. Prevention can be simple with the proper tips! So below, we’ll share our tips on how to avoid water damage- and what to do if water damage occurs.
Check Your Plumbing Regularly
While we expect our washers and sinks to perform well, normal wear and tear can sometimes lead to leaks. Once a month, make it a point to give all the plumbing in your laundry room a once-over.
Tip: Make sure you check the hoses- not only can they leak, but if they are bent or coiled, water can pool, causing mildew and mold to build up and seep into your laundry.
Use Mats
Mats are your best friend when it comes to protecting your floors. Place thick rubber mats under and in front of your washer and dryer. This ensures if there is a hidden leak, it won’t soak into your floor. It also ensures when you switch over laundry, your floor stays dry.
Tip: if you have a designated area for drip-drying clothes, put a rubber mat in that area too!
If You End Up With Water Damage
Accidents happen. If you notice that there’s water leaking onto your floor, take the following steps:
- Quickly dry the area with a soft rag.
- Allow the room to air out. For extra safety, run a floor-drying fan.
- Keep an eye on the flooring when it’s dry. If you notice warping, peeling, or mold, it’s time to get new flooring.
