Tips to Keep Your Carpet Looking Brand New

Fresh, comfortable carpeting can breathe new life into a drab living space. If you don’t take care of your carpet, however, it can become blemished by stains and damage. The good news is that modern carpeting is remarkably durable and long-lasting. By following just a few simple guidelines, you can ensure that your new carpet continues to look great for many years to come.

Don’t Scrub Spills

Despite your best intentions, scrubbing carpet spills will typically do more harm than good. Hard, abrasive scrubbing action can both spread stains and damage carpet fibers. Instead, use a carpet cleaner to lift stains and then gently dab them away with a damp cloth.

Avoid All-Purpose Cleaners

Not all cleaners are created equal. While most all-purpose cleaners work just fine on hard laminate surfaces, they can sometimes stain carpeting. Likewise, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and choose a cleaning product designed specifically for carpeting.

Don’t Drag Furniture

Always lift furniture instead of dragging it across your carpet. Dragging furniture can damage carpet fibers, and even cause tears if the furniture is especially heavy. If you have trouble lifting furniture, you can use soft furniture moving pads to protect your carpet as well.

Leave Shoes at the Door

This is probably the single easiest thing you can do to keep your carpet looking great. Shoe soles drag in all sorts of grit and grime, and if you’re not careful it can all wind up in your carpet. Establish a designated area right by your entryway for family members and guests to leave their shoes as they come in the door. This will keep your home clean, and give you an opportunity to enjoy the feeling of soft carpeting beneath your feet.
